After the protests over budget cuts, students can finally take a breath of relief. President Obama is standing with American students. He has signed a new law designed to free up more money for higher education by ending the role of banks as "middlemen" in the college lending process, the Los Angeles Times reports. The changes to the college loan business come as part of the final piece of the health care reform law.

Obama says the education measures would help meet his national goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.

The new law will also put a cap on college graduates' annual loan payments, so that they only have to pay back 10 percent of their income.
