White "savior-afflicted" missionaries, black Haitian babies?
02/04/2010
by devona walker
This story is particularly troubling. Ten white missionaries, from Idaho no less, went down to Haiti. In the chaos and the destruction, they just grabbed some young Haitian children and tried to leave the country with them. They were found out when they tried to cross the border into the Dominician Republic. Now, they are stuck in a Haitian prison, sending home cell phone pics and videos and cloaking themselves in the “Lord’s work.”

Can Brother Obama get a break?
01/25/2010
by devona walker
So, here's me playing the race card. And I apologize in advance. But I gotta ask. Would progressives be so willing to turn their backs on Barack Obama if he were white? Would opposition on the right be so thoroughly unified, if they were not uniting to destroy the black president's administration? Would the media be so quick to dissect every move and play up every ounce of dissent if Obama was not the first "black" president? If he were, let's say, Bill Clinton, would he at least be given credit for saving the nation from certain financial ruin? If it were, let's say, Ralph Nader's pinto-driving-ass who had announced a spending freeze would they be calling him Herbert Hoover?

US Airways sued for “ghettoizing” its gates and employees.
01/08/2010
by devona walker
Here’s a little nugget for those of you who think this country has moved beyond its racist past.

A recent suit brought against US Airways by the NAACP on behalf of several black employees, claims the company forced them to work at less desirable gates. Mid-level managers and white employees, the suit claims, called these less desirable gates "Compton," "Camden," and "The Ghetto."

The Tiger Woods Obsession: Equal Opportunity (haterism) Racism.

Oh, Tiger. This guy can't catch a break, not from Black America or White America.

Back on Thanksgiving the brother was clearly trying to flee his abusive blonde wife when he wrecked his Cadillac SUV and messed up his pretty, philandering face. But instead of anyone questioning exactly what the Swiss-born Elin was doing with his 8-iron, all conversations and news reports turned to him: What the hell did he do to deserve it?

I just want to quote a few of my feminist friends here: There's no excuse for domestic violence. The fact that he couldn't keep it in his pants not withstanding. There simply is no excuse.

Rebranding racism for mass consumption in post-race America
12/08/2009
by devona walker
In post-race America, life can get confusing. Fox News anchor Glenn Beck, of all people, calls President Barack Obama a racist. Teabaggers are contemplating whether they should mimmick Black Americans and embrace the term much like Blacks have embraced the N-word. And the below anti-health care ad is running in the largely black Washington D.C. media area.

Why the Maurice Clemmons story will haunt the black community
11/30/2009
by devona walker
When I heard this story I had -- what I call -- a Momma moment. Anytime a horrific crime story is reported on television, my mother watches breathlessly, and if she misses the mug shot, she will ask "where they black?" "They weren't black were they?" If the perpetrator was not black, she breathes a sigh of relief. If they are, she sighs and shakes her head.

Michelle Obama chimp pic: Racist, maybe. Disturbing yes.
11/30/2009
by devona walker
There is so much to say about this. First, there is the issue of black sensitivity. Are we so sensitive that we jump to racism when given half the chance? Well, that’s the argument I have been reading all morning. Are white folks really racist or just insensitive to the race issue? Or is this simply about picking fun at those in power, and really not caring about the fact that for the first time in history the most powerful man in this country and most notable family in this country happen to be black?

Party Crashers at Ole Miss: KKK rally scares off black recruits
11/23/2009
by devona walker
Down in Oxford, Mississippi, it appears the KKK are raising a stink again. Why? They are annoyed that the University of Mississippi has dropped the song From Dixie With Love, so they marched on campus over the weekend.

The problem here is that it happened on the weekend of the Louisiana State University game, it happened as the football department was trying to lure new recruits to the school, and it has caught the attention of other schools competing for that same talent.

Apparently several potential students, the football team was recruiting to attend the college, did not show due to the rally. The University of Mississippi coach thinks other schools are using the rally as an attempt to scare potential recruits from Ole Miss. And ultimately, the coach, Houston Nutt, doesn't believe it will work. He thinks the students will come to Ole Miss despite the rally.
