The Obama Administration has granted California permission to set requirements on automakers' greenhouse emissions from new cars, pick-ups, minivans and SUVs. The needed waiver from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency previously had been denied by the Bush Administration.
Obama's support for California's environmental measures comes after a lot of effort by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and environmental organizations to fight global warming. As a result of this decision, automakers from California and 13 other states, including the District of Columbia, will be required to produce more fuel efficient vehicles that will reduce 30 percent of their new car emissions by the year 2016.
