James Crowley, the Cambridge, Mass., police officer who arrested Henry Louis Gates Jr., received a surprise phone call from President Obama. Speaking anonymously, a fellow police officer said Crowley told him he joked with the president about having a beer with Obama and Gates at the White House.
President Obama reportedly said he regretted jumping to conclusions and saying Crowley and others in the Cambridge Police Department acted "stupidly" in handling the case of Gates, a Harvard University professor. After Obama's comments during a televised news conference Wednesday, law enforcement union leaders demanded an apology. At least some appear to be satisfied with Obama's call to Crowley.
