One of the best places to find yourself during this recession is in school. It's a great way to invest money into your future and one day, into society. Here are a few ways to make sure your higher education investment doesn't become too much of a burden while in school or when you graduate.
Only use credit cards when you have to. Credit cards can be a convenient way to shop rather than hassling with cash, but interest rates eliminate this advantage. Use debit cards as an alternative which are accepted everywhere and do not come with a bill or yearly fees.
Live in a dorm or with a roommate. Staying on campus is often cheaper than renting your own space. Internet, central air, maintenance - and sometimes even cable are offered for dorm living. For those who wish for a little more freedom, rooming with one or two others in an apartment can also save money.
Buy used items rather than new. The internet allows access to many of the same textbooks required for schooling. Choosing to rent or buy used books can bring the cost of books per semester down and keep you from going to the bookstore or waiting in line.
Stay up-to-date with scholarship opportunities. Remember that your financial offices and counselors are always thinking about money — that's their job. Take the time every so often to call or check your school Web site for new scholarship and loan opportunities.
Consider walking, public transportation, and/or riding a bike. Although gas prices have not returned to their once sky-high levels, it still makes sense to save on gas. Choosing other transportation will save money, but will also serve as a form of exercise if you bike or walk.
Learn a few home-cooked recipes. Another way to reduce spending is to make time to cook for yourself a few times a week, rather than dining out. Cooking at home is also a way to have more control over calorie intake and unhealthy eating habits.
