Talib Kweli in his own words.
Rapper Talib Kweli responds to TheLoop21 contributor Mychal Smith on his latest piece, Talib Kweli and the demise of the conscious rapper.
@RealTalibKweli | @MychalSmith |
| here's Kweli's response to my article on @theloop21 http://ow.ly/2dzxy should I respond? #takingvotes | |
| RT @divalutionary: @mychalsmith kweli's an artist, and he's sensitive about his shit [that is painfully clear lol] | |
| @RealTalibKweli I do think there were some assumptions, particularly in the beginning of your response, but they're assumptions I honestly | @mychalsmith i made no assumptions abt u homie. I respect your view and platform so I responded, but I only directly to what you wrote...one |
| @RealTalibKweli wouldn't blame you for making...but it could also be that I didn't make my position as clear as I should have | @mychalsmith name one assumption I made. Besides my "bet" that you ain't buy the album. When you make a bet you have to be ready to lose... |
| @RealTalibKweli I respect your argument, but have some disagreements...I'll respond and hopefully you'll read the next one as well..peace | @mychalsmith peace! |
| @RealTalibKweli "I say people like Mychal Smith are every bit as caught up in the flashing lights as the "ignorant" masses they like to... | @mychalsmith every you mentioned I started with I believe. Thats not an assumption. Have you purchased by new album? Or heard it? |
| @RealTalibKweli " Instead of celebrating it, they get joy from speaking against it. They truly believe not liking Gucci Mane" | @mychalsmith cmon lets do it now in real time lol. It aint a fight its a discussion. later for blogs... |
| @RealTalibKweli , some chic down south. They pay so much attention to what they perceive to be negative, " | @mychalsmith both albums? then thanks. does my musical output not fulfill enough of my "conscious" obligation or I should go harder? |
| @RealTalibKweli "based on a limited world view, that they miss the positive, even when it's right in their face." | @mychalsmith it is vain for me to list community and charity work I do, but lets say I do a healthy amount. |

I thought both of sides made valid points. It did just seem like Talib was being a bit touchy b/c he can't honestly say that conscious rap HAS NOT been on a decline.
I don't think it's fading though so much as being assimilated - and I think Mychal pointed that out too in his first post. Talid goes on in his tweets to reinforce the fact that artists have to do what they have to do to sell records for the most part.
If people were all conscious hungry, the formula would be to not support artists who rap about street life - but that's not the case, so conscious rappers have to sprinkle in a mixture of other things to remain interesting and move a reasonable number of units.
The music industry is about expanding at a time when all aspects of it are shrinking. I think Kweli is genuine in his intentions - but I think his actions confuse his base and may eventually leave him without one...
Hope I'm wrong - but I'm just sayin.
