Mel Gibson, save your apology

“Liquor make you tell the truth.”
My Aunt Sarah used to tell me this whenever someone in the family would try to apologize for getting drunk and hurting someone’s feelings. Her point was that, despite our attempts to “blame it on the alcohol,” the state of inebriation doesn’t prompt us to say things we don’t really mean. Instead, spirits simply remove the inhibitions that suppress our innermost thoughts and feelings. As a result, we should not put much stock in the subsequent apology, which has more to due with embarrassment than remorse.
This has certainly proved to be the case for Mel Gibson.
In 2006, an intoxicated Gibson was pulled over for speeding on a Malibu highway. As the police attempted to take him into custody, Gibson went on a lengthy and vicious anti-Semitic tirade, blaming the Jews for everything from global warfare to Bobby Brown leaving New Edition. Fully aware that such moves are a severe occupational hazard, a sobered up Gibson quickly issued a public statement in which he expressed regret and shame for his antics. More importantly, he expressed disbelief at the anti-Semitic venom of his own comments, assuring the public that his drunken rant was not reflective of his true beliefs. To underscore his point, Gibson quickly checked into a rehabilitation center, sparking a new celebrity trend of using rehab as means of wedging space between their hate-speech and their individual character.
Soon after the incident, Jewish leaders like Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League, made it clear that they were unwilling to accept Gibson’s apology. Simply put, they didn’t believe him.
The mother wit of my Aunt Sarah aside, there were multiple reasons to believe that Gibson was less than contrite. Despite numerous attempts, Gibson failed to unequivocally reject his father’s claims that the Holocaust never happened, instead choosing to sidestep the question with fancy rhetorical footwork. Also, The Passion of the Christ, Gibson’s record-breaking film, placed exclusive blame on the Jews for the death of Jesus at the expense of Roman accountability. Additionally, Gibson had made a career of uttering equally vicious public statements against other groups, such as women and the LGBT community. Surely, all of these issues weighed into the ADL’s decision to reject Gibson’s dubious apology.
Now, in the wake of Gibson’s most recent outbursts, they have been proven right.
According to several published reports, Gibson has been caught on tape and e-mail making equally offensive comments during an argument with his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. In the midst of an intense argument over custody of their 8-month-old child, Gibson repeatedly called Grigorieva a “b----,” “c---,” and “whore,” promised to burn down her home, and threatened to sodomize her. Gibson warned his ex that her appearance would get her “raped by a pack of niggers.”
Apparently, they didn’t cover racism and misogyny during his last trip to “hate rehab.”

My goal here isn’t to point out the obvious, which is that Gibson is a disgusting misanthrope who has no business raising a gerbil, much less a human being.

How does this concern you or the public Mister? always jumping up & down on people's affairs. He did it to his galfriend or x-galfriend damn it!!
You got all this blogging twisted Sir, I respect you but you are too much.
I guess on the downside slope of a career built on his charismatic on- and off-screen persona he feels freer to be himself and doesn’t have to worry about his fans not showing up to his movies after his verbal indiscretions. This is the same guy who aside from the occasional anti-Semitic rants abandoned his supportive wife and several kids for his knocked up girlfriend. If anybody, he owes an “I’m sorry” to them and a “what’d you expect?” to the girlfriend. Honestly, I expect nothing less. If anything, I would expect more creative racist tirades. Which, ni**as was he referring to? Young Money. A random Riker’s prison gang. A Harvard All Black barbershop quartet. Be specific and be more importantly be funny. That way people are so busy laughing they might forget how much of a d**k he is.
Great article! However, I must disagree on one point. Liquor is not a truth serum. When I used to drink I often would do or say things quite opposite of my true feelings. Now I was no Mel Gibson. I wouldn't lash out at an entire people. However, I would sometimes lash out at an individual that I had no ill will toward or suddenly love an individual I normally couldn't stand. So, I have never agreed with believing that alcohol brings out people's true feelings.
Great stuff on apologies though. I agree completely.
Great commentary. I agree wholeheartedly, our need for an apology for nonsense continues our need for acceptance. A need that can be traced back to slavery. We all know that the buying power of black and brown people is unsurpassed (another manifestation of our need to be accepted) so if we want people to respect us then we need to only spend our dollars with those that don't need to apologize for their hate. Better yet let's educate our children on these suttle nuances related to modern day racism so they can break this cycle of 'shuckin' for apologies from people who don't like them or what they stand for.
Hopefully he'll spare us the apology. But what's the alternative? I'm with Toure on this- let's just boycott his work. He's not going to learn a damn thing by it, but at least WE will feel better about this whole thing by not putting more money in that bastard's pockets.
I didn't want an apololie from Mayer either he can just go f--k himself seeing how he is a hella ugly little doucherag who writes worthless emo CRAP! Same goes for Gibson his looks are LONG GONE and that was most of his appeal anyway now he wants to be the next Pat Buchanan or Glenn Beck well he picked the WRONG group of people to mess with. I hope the Jews in Hollowood squash the cockroach like he richly deserves by the time they are done that prick will be lucky to get 'Dancing with the Stars' lol.
