According to CNN Money, Toyota said on Friday that it will recall about 600,000 Sienna minivans to address potential corrosion on spare tire cables. The recall includes certain 1998 to 2010 model years sold in the United States and operated in cold climate areas, the automaker said in a statement. Toyota said "prolonged exposure" to road salts may lead to corrosion of the carrier cable in these vehicles, which could in turn cause the spare tire to fall from the car, endangering other motorists.

The sense of frustration — and urgency — in the e-mail message was palpable.

“I hate to break this to you,” a Toyota executive wrote, “but we have a tendency for mechanical failure in accelerator pedals of a certain manufacturer on certain models.”

According to Associated Press, a U.S. company executive wrote in an internal e-mail: "We need to come clean about accelerator problems," five days before Toyota announced a massive recall.

Irv Miller, Toyota's group vice president for environment and public affairs, wrote: "The time to hide on this one is over." He went on to say: "We are not protecting our customers by keeping this quiet." Shortly after Miller wrote the internal email Toyota officials were on their way to Washington to discuss the problems with federal regulators.

Now Honda is Planning a Recall?

Brake problems on Honda Odysseys and Elements have forced the automaker to announce it will recall more than 410,000 vehicles beginning next month, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

Honda's recall for brake problems is the latest in a series of recalls by Japanese automakers.

The problem happens very gradually, so most owners of the recalled vehicles can wait until April 19, when Honda will begin notifying them to contact a dealer to have the problem fixed. The information of who's affected will also be available online here or by phone (800-999-1009, option 4).

According to CNNMoney, Toyota Motor U.S. sales chief James Lentz will face the House subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations at Capitol Hill Tuesday. The committee is expecting Lentz to explain how the troubled automaker has managed its recent massive recall -- and what it will do in the future.

Lentz said in prepared testimony that, "Put simply, it has taken us too long to come to grips with a rare but serious set of safety issues, despite all of our good faith and efforts. The problem has been compounded by poor communication both within our company and with regulators and consumers."
