Black Men Still Hit Hardest By Unemployment

The St. Louis American reports that as the nation’s largest peacetime jobs program, the U.S. Census 2010 effort, winds down and its temporary workforce continues to join the ranks of the unemployed, a growth in private sector jobs was not enough to keep the unemployment rate from climbing slightly, one-tenth of a percentage point to 9.6 percent, in August.

African-American men, the hardest hit group of workers, were hit hardest again. Their unemployment rate is 17.3 percent, up from 16.7 percent, nearly double the 8.9 percent unemployment rate for white men.

Women of both races fared better with 7.1 percent unemployment for whites and 13.2 percent unemployment for African Americans.

Obama Calls for Improving Small Business Climate

President Obama cited small businesses as "the primary drivers of job creation" and called on Congress, especially the GOP, to tackle a bill aimed at improving the climate for such enterprises, CNN reports.

In his Friday speech from the White House, which came on the heels of news that private sector jobs had been created for an eighth straight month, Obama said the legislation should be Congress' first order of business when it reconvenes this month. He pleaded with Congress to "put aside partisanship and be the leaders the American people need us to be."

Urban League Chooses Jobs Card Over Race Card at Annual Conference

Don't expect to hear the words "tea party" at the National Urban League's annual conference in Washington this week, the Washington Post reports.

The Urban League, which is turning 100 this year, isn't spoiling for the fight that the NAACP attracted after passing a resolution calling out "racist elements" within the conservative grass-roots movement at its own convention this month. That move brought NAACP a heavy backlash from tea party supporters.

The Associated Press is reporting that Oprah Winfrey wants to give an undiscovered talent a chance to follow in her footsteps on her new cable network.

The talk show host is teaming up with reality TV producer Mark Burnett on a show searching for the next big TV personality. "Your Own Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star" will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network beginning in January, the same month of OWN's launch.

Winfrey is ending "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in September 2011 after 25 seasons.
