  • I'm an African American man, and when I hear these type of stories, it often takes a lot of my energy. The media will take a story such as this and run with it. There are so very many racial injustices that occur every day, that are not reported. This is a joke to me. Is this story newsworthy or interesting because he is a Harvard professor? How about talking about some beatings, perhaps, or some wrongful incarcerations, or hiring discrimination. I have had bad experiences with racist police officers, and have had situations in which they changed their perception and treatment of me, after a conversation. I'm willing to bet that both parties gave a biased version of what happened. First off, I am always under the assumption that many police officers are "power freaks", and stereotpe people. However, I can remember "not wanting" to answer questions and because I felt that they were targeting me. I'm not convinced that this professor immediately showed his I.D. The officer probably didn't treat the professor with the correct amount of dignity, most likely. We all know that many police officers have big egos, and don't enjoy being "fronted off." What bothers me, is that stories like this are overblown, and stories of severe injustices and inprisonment are not told at all. When the media jumps all over these stories, then Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are all over it. Eventually, there is the perception that we are always mad, and whining about the white man. I just need to see more balance. Too much of one story, and not enough of others that illustrate severe injustices that ruin people's lives, or injustices that deserve more publicity than this successful Harvard who followed some power-hungry (and maybe very well racist) police officer outside and called him a racist in front of people.

  • Good poetic commentary on some common truths. Way to strike some nerves, and make people think. People need to stop chasing other people's brand names and logos all the time.

  • Great article. Very thoughtful, logical and clear-minded analysis of the issue. One wonders why these type of common sense approaches are not implemented in law enforcement more often, consistently or thoroughly. It seems that those who make the rules usually have little regard for what is fair and practical for the average person, or for those without "proper representation", education or power. However, the arrogant sometimes are victims of their own selfishness, egos, thirst for power and lack of respect for the general public.

  • Thank you for addressing a topic that many don't understand, or don't have the desire, depth or common sense to care about or even try to examine. I'm glad that you mentioned the fact that Jewish people died in the civil rights fight, before I rushed to judgement, in anger. I am so glad and proud that Obama had the courage to address this issue honestly: This showed true courage and character. I was beginning to have some questions about him, and how he had become more mainstream. He is trying to solve a problem; and not ignore or distort it, like our previous president. In relation to the settlements, Israel has obviously become the oppressor. I have not had to deal with the constant hatred and terrorist attacks that Israel has endured, so it is easy for me to speak about this topic, from the comfort of my bedroom. However I have to that he U.S. has some weird, phony love affair with Israel. It is this country that perpetuated hatred and stereotypes against Jewish people, in the 20th century. Israel has been caught spying on the U.S. very recently, and also sank a U.S. spy ship in the 20th century. Why does every politician try so hard to pretend to be in love with Israel? Is this some prerequisite for election? If no one will bring truth, then there is no way to even try to make a situation better. Obama decided to jump out of bed with Israel - even though he had seemed willing be in bed with them, during the campaign. I hate to say this, but there seems to be a sense of entitlement that Israel has, in regard to the U.S. Their leaders have openly spoken about how, when and where the U.S. should react to aggression of Arab countries, or terrorism. Obama is not responsible for the U.S. and the United Nations for helping establish the state of Israel in the 20th century, and for the subsequent collateral damage, hatred and resentment that citizens of Arab counties feel. I was disturbed by the comments by many of the young Jewish people on the video. If you really feel that strongly to call Obama such names, like he is a coward or Arab-appeaser - if you are that millitant and hardcore, then strap a bomb to your body, like many Muslims have done. The U.S. can not spread itself thin forever, and fight so many causes around the world. Many of the causes, the U.S. should not have been involved in, to begin with. It's not easy to clean up Bush and Cheney's mess that they have made of the world. The past administration, Bill Clinton, the other Bush and Reagan have all served to damage this nation and the world in one way or another. Our leaders have destroyed the economy with deeds such as de-regulation, irresponsibility, NAFTA, or damaging the image and credibility of this country, by supplying Iran, Iraq and other countries with weapons, then later deeming them as threats to peace and stability, and launching unecessary wars. I did not vote for Barack Obama to be anybody's puppet. He is trying for real solutions; whether you think they are naieve, anti-Israel or ill-conceived. I'm still waiting for someone to come up with a better solution. Or a solution.

  • Thanks for the compliment. There are so many ways to look at this art form that we all enjoy (whether we like it or not). That was a good way to describe it, when you said it is a "guilty pleasure." If this is true, at least that means that you have put some thought into it. Some people don't even want to be burdened, to think. Jules

  • Jules Lange: Diary of a Mad "Light Skin-ded" Man
    Wed, 07/22/2009 - 00:00
I’m from the old school, so you can’t tell me anything about my people and the politics behind this skin complexion thing. I still remember when they used to pronounce it, “dark skin-ded” and “light skin-ded with good hair.” This issue in the black community and the realm of thought behind it is as deep and complex as it is shallow and superficial. ...

When I was growing up as a young boy in the 1970’s, I loved to watch television, just like everybody else. I think it’s safe to say that I was addicted to it. It would be hard to conjure the words to describe the excitement and satisfaction that I experienced while viewing my favorite weekly TV shows. ...
