  • Hi there. Nice post. I too think we are on the brink of change. However, I think we should be careful not to essentialize those of us of the "racially mixed" persuasion :-) I also think that it's a generalization to assume/imply that racially mixed people (should) automatically support Obama b/c he's of mixed heritage. I support Obama (after initially supporting Hillary - a "white" woman, oh for shame!) because I believe in his vision and policies for the future. I don't see him as my "racially mixed" Savior that will, upon elected, automatically eradicate social injustices that folks of color, including racially mixed people, encounter. Perhaps it's better noted that an Obama administration will open the flood gates for us to dialogue about multi-racial people living in america and around the world, and recognize our failures as a society to overcome the "isms." However, I wouldn't assume that, all-of-a-sudden, racially mixed people will somehow "find their identity" (and the idea of " finding identity" is even up for debate). Issues that racially mixed people confront is certainly a cultural conundrum - one that all of us will have to address together. I am "mixed" (and I'm certainly proud of my many heritages). I don't profess that any politician or societal leader dictate who I am just because of who s/he is. And I certainly don't think society in general will be "kinder" to me because Obama and I share similar ethnic backgrounds and skin tones. Yet still, I'm optimistic that an Obama presidency will help push us all toward a more open and just society. But it's ultimately up to the people to shift the paradigm, transforming our ideologies about "race" in the process. (This little rant isn't necessarily directed at anyone specific - I think it's AWESOME what The Loop is doing, especially allowing folks like me to express my opinions/views about issues concerning "mixed" folks:-)
