It has been months since the COVID19 pandemic has hit the world. It has been found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can affect each person quite differently. Scientists have been working tirelessly to come up with a cure for the disease. They have examined a couple of vitamins and minerals, which can reduce the severity of the disease. Well, they have come up with certain success as well. Experts have revealed that taking a zinc supplement can lower the severity of the ailment. This study has been conducted in Spain, where experts have observed the link between zinc and COVID19 infection. The findings of the study have been presented at the 2020 ESCMID Conference on Coronavirus Disease (ECCVID).
Health experts have analyzed the blood sample data of 611 COVID19 patients with an average age of 63. They have observed the zinc levels of 249 patients including 21 patients who have lost their lives due to disease. They have found that people who have survived have 63.1 milligrams per deciliter of zinc in their blood sample. On the other hand, people who died only had 43 milligrams per deciliter zinc levels in their blood samples. Experts have said that a higher amount of zinc in the blood is linked to lower levels of pro-inflammatory proteins among the patients who have been infected. The team of experts has said that lower levels of zinc in the blood can trigger the severe disease.
Scientists have said that zinc strengthens the immune system. Len Horovitz, the pulmonologist at Lenox Hill Hospital has informed that zinc might have an anti-inflammatory agent, which provides protection against the COVID19 infection. Previous studies as well have found similar findings. Taking a zinc supplement is a cost-effective way to avoid severe infection and is available over the counter for people. Recently, experts have revealed that vitamin D and vitamin B as well, protect against severe COVID19 disease. They have recently added zinc in the list of supplements, which are very useful in decreasing the severity of the ailment.
