Russia’s coronavirus cases exceed 1 million, globally 4th highest

Russia’s number of confirmed cases of coronavirus reached one million Tuesday as 4,729 new cases were reported by authorities. Russia has the fourth biggest caseload in the world after the US, Brazil and India, with a total of 1,000,048 reported cases. More than 815,000 people have recovered so far, officials said, and more than 17,000 are missing.

As of Tuesday, Russia has relaxed most restrictions on the lockdown in most regions of the country. Last month, the Russian authorities declared approval of the first ever Covid-19 vaccine — a development that Western experts met with scepticism and discomfort, as the shots were tested on just a few dozen individuals. Officials last week declared the beginning of advanced vaccine trials for 40,000 people.

It is uncertain whether the announced earlier this year vaccination of risk classes — such as doctors and teachers — will be part of the trials or conducted in parallel. Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month that he had already vaccinated one of his children.
