The United States reported on Wednesday more than 60,000 new cases of Covid-19, the largest increase ever recorded in a single day by a country, according to a tally from Reuters.The United States is facing a grim summer of record-breaking infections and several states have been forced to shut down parts of the economy again, leaving some workers without paychecks.
In addition to nearly 10,000 new cases in Florida, Texas reported over 9,500 cases, and more than 8,500 new infections recorded in California. Both recorded a record one-day rise in deaths in California and Texas too. This was the second day in a row that US deaths rose by more than 900 in a day, according to the count, the highest rate seen since early June.
Tennessee, West Virginia and Utah all reported regular rises in new cases, and infections are on the rise in 42 out of 50 states, according to a case review by Reuters for the past two weeks relative to the two weeks before. The US count stood late on Wednesday at 60,020, with a few local governments still not reporting. Last Friday the previous US high was 56,818 for new cases in a day. More than 3 million infections and 132,000 deaths from the virus have been recorded in the United States, placing the pandemic policy of President Donald Trump under scrutiny. Globally, Wednesday’s cases rose to over 12 million, with 546,000 deaths.
